Does anyone use an M8 amp? From what I read they are about 5 watts? I'm thinking about getting one for use at the house. Just not too much info on them out there.

It's in the same class as the Fender Champ, with a single 6V6 power tube, and yes, roughly 5 watts. It had a Jensen C8Q speaker 8 inch speaker. The schematic is located here: http://www.rickenbacker.com/pdfs/m8e.pdfLots of these were made primarily for student use but it's hard to say how many might still be around. I have one, which is currently on load to a band mate, and he likes it to play in his home studio- breaks up nicely without disturbing the neighbors.

Looking at an M8E now. I see the cabinets are bigger than the M8. Is that the only difference in the two amps? Does anyone know how to determine the year of manufacture of these amps?

Many amps had the two letter-three or four number serial format and can be decoded here under the service tab. However, most of the small amps just had a four digit number and unfortunately I've never seen a log for these. Maybe someday all of the data from our production receipts might be put into a database but that would be a huge job.

I'd be curious to subsitute the resistor in the PSU filtering section by a choke.
