I just wanted to revive this thread as it can help a lot of us. I wanted to just add that some folks may have stuff to add here or may vary their approach. Please post here as again it will help all of us.

to prevent belt-buckle damage, just don't use a belt for heaven's sake! or just buckle your belt towards the side of the body, or have someone buckle it on your back. :-))

On some of the early '80's instruments, like mine, the Kluson shafts do not stick out above the headstock far enough. So I wrap one above then the rest below, taking care to be very careful to trim the string to the exact length so an optimum number of winds are on the post without overlapping or binding on the tuning post bushing.

Wedding Rings? - I have a wedding ring that has tiny ridges in a pattern going around it - after years of playing I began to notice that the ring was working as sandpaper on the back of the neck by the binding as I slid my hand up and down - slowly wearing down the finish. Since it is unadvisable to remove said rings for gigs (raises eyebrows) - I would suggest smooth rounded rings.
