I remember as small boy in the 1950's I had a small portable/mono only record player that had a forever aroma quite similar to the fabled "Rick-O-Smell". That damned thing STIll carried that aroma well into the 1970's when I finally gave it away.
Thinking back now, that old player gave me my first listen to Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers (All I Have To Do Is Dream), Little Richard etc. The 45's mostly belong to my older sister. I bought my first 45 in either 1958 or 1959 (I believe) which was Jerry Keller's "Here Comes Summer." We were verboten to use my parents Hi-Hi unless my dad put on one of our disks or two at an extended family event or BBQ.
I strongly remember that WW II generation as not so keen on rock and roll nor the artists unless it was someone "tame" such as Ricky Nelson or possibly Dave "Baby" Cortez. No joke, but, the name of Dave's massive 1959 hit that made him famous was an instrumental titled "The Happy Organ" heavy with electric organ and saxophone.

ohh geez, what memories! was it pink by any chance?
My older sister had a pink 'Barbie & Ken' record player where she played Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, Percy Faith, & Mantovani records around the same period of 1960.
Then came The Ventures and all hell broke lose in the house over who could use the record player. I won, of course, being the youngest. The funny thing is that my sister still has that pink Barbie & Ken record player with the original white 6½" speaker, as well as all her Barbies and Kens. You are Awarded the "I Was A Fool" Medal for letting yours go.
Check this out: I have a 1960's AUDIOTRONICS 300E classroom record player which sounds awesome, the TONE control works in reverse, very weird, clockwise it adds treble, counter-clockwise it adds bass. It can play 4 different record speeds, (16, 78, 45, 33), I use it for my 45 rpm records. Nothing like old vinyl.

My new 4003 came with a very mild yet pleasant new-case scent. Much nicer than the smell that came with my new Epiphone's case a few years back. That thing still reeks... Rickenbacker guitars...fantastic quality..right down to the smell. =p

Well, I'm a strange one here. I actually LOVE the smell of a new Ric. In the last ten years I have had my fair share of brand new ones. I believe 5 at last count!! Unfortunately, medical condition forced sale of all my equipment and basses.
I am going to get another 4003 in the future.....anyway...back to the question. I love the Ric smell. I do also believe its the cases as OI don't remember the Older cases having that strong an scent....but I like the smell. Reminds me of a Ric.

I bought a new vintage-style Rickenbacker case from Pick of the Ricks back in March for one of my 4001V63s bought second-hand with a nice enough but cheap and non-original hardshell case. From the moment it arrived, the new vintage-style case has had a distinctive and decidedly pleasant vanilla/plastic smell to it, which is clearly due to the enclosed brown bag of desiccant from Desiccare, Inc. ( www.desiccare.com) Just as well, perhaps, that it comes with the cautionary note "Do Not Eat ● Ne Pas Avaler ● No Comas"!
