I have just purchased my dream Guitar a Rickenbacker 330 in Jetglo, its simply a beauty. I am looking for some advice on how to achieve the jangle sound i love so much. I am a big Beatles/Byrds fan and I love the sound of REM/The Smiths etc.
I have been teaching myself guitar for about two years but i am a complete novice when it comes to equipment. I currently have a small marshall 15w amp and i not sure this is right? I am confused with the ric settings and how to obatin that sound. Can anyone offer me any advice on what amp i should buy and what effects pedal to purchase. I see many are buying this Jinglebells supported by Roger mcquinn etc but im not sure my budget runs this far. Can anyone offer some help on what set up to achieve? i wish i could personally ask roger mcquinn or one of the beatles what they used but this is impossible. The ric sound on songs like turn turn turn and REM songs like the one I love is what i want to achieve. Can anyone please help????

From what I understand using some kind of a compressor would go a long way to helping you to achieve "that" sound. Someone else here might be able to help with a few models of pedal you could try. You'll probably also want to dial out a lot of the gain on your Marshall to get a cleaner sound.

I was just reading about this topic a few days ago. If you use the search forum function searching on "jangle" "compression" "compressor" "jangle effects" etc, you should come up with some threads that will help you.

Where'd you get that crazy user name by the way?

I used a boss compressor before I got humbuckers. It sounded pretty good (I was and still was looking for a distorted sound, but at the store, I tried it through a fender bassman clean, and it sounded like John Lennon playing rythem in Day Tripper). With humbuckers, I don't need it.

In the early Byrds Roger used a Fender Showman amp and later a dual showman for live shows. I think I remember reading somewhere that in the studio he went directly through the board. Since Fender no longer makes this model you would have to find a used one which usually isn't too hard.

Is your 330 a 6 or a 12 string? It'll be easier to achieve the sound you're going for if you bought a 12.

BlueRick is right, the first thing is having an electric 12 string. I have played Turn, Turn Turn many times since the 60´s (including the last week), in the groups I have been, and I have used several guitars and amps. There are differences even betwen a 360 and a 370. But I think its going to be difficult to match exactly the sound you hear in a recorded song like that. You have to try combinations with the treble an mid pickups of your guitar (and pics tones too), with the treble, mid, bass and reverb of the amp. I prefer the treble pickup only (with the tone at 10), high treble, mid midle, low bass and some reverb in my Fender Ult. Chorus. Its my own choise and its sounds well to my groupies (and near to what I hear in the original CD). Try yours.

Another problem when trying to sound like original recordings from the 60's is that they were vari-speeded. Basically they just sped the tapes up, so not only were they faster but the pitch went up as well. Terry Melcher, the producer of the early Byrds recordings used to do this to their singles.

The Beatles did this as well, a classic example is the intro Ric sound on Ticket to Ride.
