I have a situation where someone at work is retiring in a few weeks and has heard a couple of my covers on CD. She wants me to 'throw something together' to perform in front of 40 to 100 co-workers at her retirement party. I'm an out of shape, old fart who hasn't gigged (or even played that much) since '84. She's a big oldies (late 50's early 60's) fan so I'm throwing together a 10 to 15 minute medley, doing all the parts. I plan to mix out the lead vocal and just sing to the CD at the party. Tonight I used my 330/6 (with flanger) to lay down chords for 'You've lost that loving feeling'. I'm psyched, but nervous. Lotta years gone by, lotta credibility to lose. Now I'm down to 1 gig per century!
When I was between bands in 2000, my wife and I played a big millenium New Year's party with back-tracks I recorded. I left the lead guitar out of the mix as well as her vocals and my vocals. I played live lead to the tracks, and I gotta admit, it was fun....the whole place was dancing too. A friend of mine in Vancouver does that on a regular basis for pay.
When I recorded, I mixed for a live, dry sound...drums and bass in the middle, choral vocals in the middle and other guitars on left or right with little or no reverb---I Phil Spectored the BG vocals, however....

I'm not giving up. Other local musicians tell me that Disney World killed the live music business in Orlando. could that be true?
the other gossip is that club managers killed the live music business by refusing to pay musicians, instead booking groups that play free for "exposure".
Exposure my foot. If you heard what I have heard in some Orlando nightclubs, not only "would you stand up and walk out on them", but you would also have a few words to say to the manager as you walked out :-))

Mr., You're a Better Than I......(good Yardbirds tune) Here, in the Land That Sherman Forgot, club owners hire only with the stipulation that the band brings a lotta peeps....many many lame bands bring carloads of drunks, and nail down a steady gig....I've had it...rock on Zurdo

The Yardbirds! that group produced 3 of the best guitarists in the history of Rock, I still listen to them!

Yep...Jimmy, Eric and Jeff are no slouches, and Paul Samwell-Smith on that big Epiphone---ACK!...sorry....on that bass that SHALL remain unamed.....cool band, those Yardbirds...

:-)) that Epiphone was THE bass of choice in those days as you might remember, The Animals (Chas Chandler) played one, Gerry and The Pacemakers played one, the unknown band in the movie "To Sir With Love" played one, and many other famous bands like The Yardbirds.
in 2007, I sold my 1966 cherry red Gibson EB-2 to a guy in Norway who I think was one of ABBA's bass players, those basses are still 'in fashion' in Europe.
those were the days my friend! Clearly, the present sucks. :-))

EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THE RICKENBACKER STILL MAKES 12-STRINGS AND BASSES!!!!....sorry Mr. Hall...we grizzled veterans become unfocused and surly in this new Jonas Brothers millenium....(but...a cherry red Gibson EB-2....mercy)
About as in-fashion here in Europe as black & white TV's!

Paul Samwell-Smith...Yarbirds bassist....and I just remembered---Chris Hillman of the Byrds played an Epiphone EB-2 when they first got famous---LATER, he played a white Rickenbacker bass when they got put in the R&R Hall of Fame....special axe for a special night.....

Chas Chandler's bass was loaned to Noel Redding upon joining The Jimi Hendrix Experience and soon had to be sold to keep the band afloat.
The 'unknown band' in the movie "To Sir With Love" was "The Mindbenders".
