Right then, back on topic: PICKGUARD. Where should I go?
I've acquired an excellent '76 bridge for too much money, I'm bidding on a fully functional wiring harness (with Ric-O-Sound!) that I assume will actually accommodate the knobs I bought, and I'm sending my bridge pickup on a slow boat to Portugal.
What remains is a proper pickguard. I don't much care for black on Burgundyglo, so I won't bother to strip the green enamel off the old cracked one. Not being an (you said bad word) collector, I'm not adverse to a new custom pickguard, and I think pearl would look great. Here are my questions:
-Are some custom pickguard makers more desirable than others?
-Is there a potential issue on my '72 with a decision between one-ply, two-ply or three-ply? (In other words, will the knobs still thread if the pickguard is too thick?)

YESsir, got the new wiring harness from a 1980 4001 in a frenzy of last minute bidding on ebay, 4 seconds to spare, and paid too much again. Or did I? Time will tell, gollum gollum.
Anyroad...who's got some good pickguard advice?

Hey Lyle.
Just got back, as it were.
I'll be waiting for the treble pickup to arrive. As for a new pickguard for your 4001, well, you have seen my '79 4080 with white pickguards made by me 24 years ago. Also, the pickguard now on my November '70 21 fret 4001 was made by me four years ago. Meaning I don't think I have lost my touch as far as fashioning pickguards for Rick basses is concerned. If you feel like giving me a try...
