Long story short, a local man was trying to sell this bass for $1000.00 After meeting with him twice we agreed on a price of $250.00.

It looks like it might have sat in water for quite a while. As you can see by the photos, for the most part it's still a beautiful bass, but what's damaged is damaged significantly. The electronics don't work, but I'm thinking the problem is in the jacks and I will fiddle with all that.

The jack plate is destroyed to the point that there is no date code left, so I have no idea how old it is...being a 4001 I'll assume it's a 1981 model or older. I do know the truss rod cover is different from my '78. This one has clear plastic covering the entire cover.

Anyway...I am wondering if Rickenbacker or any great luthier could restore the body back to the condition it should be in...and do so without costing me more than what the bass is worth.

If it's going to cost me too much to restore the body, I will just sand everything down. I have a friend who is an artist and he will put a psychedelic paint job on this thing, and I'll just hang it as art.

Any suggestions?

Man, oh, man! What a mess!

That WAS a fairly nice bass with a bit of birdseye. Parts might be worth what you paid for it, but no way worth $1k.

Anyway, it's a 4001, likely around 1974 or so. It's gonna cost a LOT to restore it to like new. There are a couple of guys who could do it, but probably for more than it would be worth...

The guys I know about are Paul Wilczynski and Larry Davis. I've had Paul restore a guitar for me, really nice work.
