It's actually as strong as the original wood, whereas doweling is only so if the dowel is made of the same hard wood (which you did say, but most dowels are not), and only if it's an extremely tight fit into the hole so the glue is properly compressed as it dries... which means you have to drill out the old threads first, too - otherwise there is not a perfect fit between the dowel and the hole wall. (This is why the toothpick method only works properly when done WET.)

I am going to have to endorse BA's method, at least for Average Joe the Bassists like me. The way I understand its description it seems like it is forming a better connection with the original wood than a dowel rod. But like BA himself said, if Jingle_Jangle were to do the dowel method, I wouldn't worry about incompetency or repair failure the way I would if I did it.

Yeah I just used BA's method and it worked like a charm. I am sure the doweling method works well to, but there is a lot more fine tuning to it. All the ugliness is hidden by the button anyhow, so no need for the percision work and sanding eh. Thanks again.

Isn't there a metal insert into with the strap button bolt screws into?

No. To bring back a 2009 thread.
