Why did some 4001 basses have 21 frets while others had only 20 frets?

Very, very few had 21 frets. I really have no idea why they were produced- perhaps just as a test- but it didn't go on long.

Thanks for your reply John, do you know what years the 21 fretters were produced?

I do too! That would be awesome. But they're not.

Is there just not really enough space for more frets or what? Why aren't there 21 frets on more of them? I assume there must be some reason.

To make them rare and desirable! I'm lucky enough to own two, an August '70 and a November '70. Mighty fine 4001 basses they are!

Figures Jeff needs an extra fret on his instruments. He won't let it go to waste either.

Seems like the 21 fretters were around the years 70-71.
