You won't get it as a reissue (at least not in the USA!!!) but if it's the aesthetics that you like, it's not a big deal to convert an older Rick to this look.

That's what some of us used to call "V68" A re-issuse of the 1968 4001 ... that was the last year of the horseshoe. it would look like this --- >>> http://www.3dentourage.com/425/68-ric-2.htmActually the modern 4003 bass is almost there. They have gone back to the 60s headstock shape and brought back walnut head wings, the 60s shape body wings. The neck got slimmer and it got full width inlays. You can purchase a toaster and horseshoe pickups. The vintage push/pull circuit gives you the .0047 capacitor tone. The only part missing is the checkered binding and the old style TRC, and you can get the old style TRC from ebay at various times. So the ONLY thing that keeps Rickenbacker from doing that is they don't currently put checkered binding on basses. The last time they did that was the Lemmy basses. They could do a limited run and charge a higher price ... that is a decision RIC would make ...

I don't get the big obsession over checkered binding--yes it's pretty but that's about all there is to it. But if RIC is ever in trouble financially all they'll have to do to is make some basses with CB and problem solved...

Which is important when your basses main function is to look pretty hanged on a wall!!! Sadly or not, is the case for my basses...

The checkerboard quickly signifies "Vintage". Although prestigious to own who would want to have one (plunk down the cash) for anything other than display purposes? For playability, my '11 4003 is the best I've had. Modern electronics, great wood, modern finish. Then again, I really don't remember much of those old days!!!

I guess I'm selfishly disinterested in CB because it keeps stuff in my price range!

As far as getting a toaster pickup and a Horseshoe, I would agree with you. But putting the checkerboard binding may be a bit more labor intensive! It would make sense on a major restoration project in a ''while-doing-this-might-as-well...'' kind of thing, if like me you are a sucker for the checkerboard binding. I have notice that some new guitars are offered with this binding. One may keep hope that it will be available again as an option for the 4003. It makes the Mapleglow and Fireglow finish stands out very well (but is pretty blah on the Jetglo, IMHO of course). Cheers Jeff

Very Nice! I agree, I love the look of the CB, but really cant stand the binding on my 2011 4003, I played in an acoustic setting for about 5 hours on Fri eve, sitting on a stool. Man, when I was finished, I had some serious "lines" on the inside of my forearm about 2" down from my elbow. Got to the point of really being irritating. Dont get me wrong, I love this instrument more that any other bass I have, and Hey, thats my fault for sitting with it for that long. But it wouldnt break my heart to see a 4003 "binding option" available. I would be willing to bet that 50% of buyers would opt out. Not everyone can spend the extra dough and try to get a discontinued model without the binding (C-64 or V 63 model) I know!! Make the binding an option, but keep the price the same. That would make the no binding option cheaper to build,.. then the people who want the binding could get a checkered binding! Kind of a price "wash" for RIC! Think thats a good idea John? I better get some more coffee.......
