Hi guys

My first post here. I want to make some adjustments to my Cheyenne. I want it to give off a more trebly, classic Rick tone, do yo suggest I change the neck pickups?

I've heard about getting the neck pickup rewired to single coil or to get it replaced with toaster pickups. Or if there's something else I should do please let me know

You can add toaster pickups. Also wiring it with stacked pots will give you the ability to blend pickups. Also the hb-1 pickups can wired single, parallel, or series. Check schematics on the Rickenbacker web site here. You can also swap the pots out with 500k ohm or 1000k ohm ... or perhaps the easiest is get a bass eq pedal and turn up the treble and high mids ...

Either toasters or high-gains, or you can replace one of the knobs with a push-pull and either coil-tap or series/parallel wire the HB-1's.

Ric5 & iiipopes have a simplest way to get you'd like. Try it......In fact you can do both pickups with a push/pull to split the coils. And the POT change from 500K ohm to 1000K ohm
is an easy mod too.

With due respect, I am not in favor of 1 meg pots. The "ramp" can be harsh - approaching all or nothing, without the progressive sweep of the stock pots, or even 500 kohm audio taper pots. And this is especially evident if an audio taper pot is used for the volume control.

I would not go more than 500 kohm audio taper. You simply won't gain any more audible top end. You'd be better off, if absolute maximum treble was required, to wire an old 8 kohm "button top" high gain direct to jack with no controls, which has less impedance, therefore a higher resonant peak, therefore is a "brighter" pickup.

Another option would be to change out the tone control for a "no-load" pot, that when dimed actually opens up internally so there is no loading to ground through a tone circuit. Again, some like it; I find no-load to ground on the tone side of the circuit to be harsh also.

Before doing anything else, change to fresh stainless steel wrap strings, like a Rotosound Swingbass 40's set (lighter strings are more flexible, therefore more overtones, therefore "brighter"), and check the cables and the amp settings to see if something else is damping the signal chain.

Why? Don't you know it's all about that bass (no treble)? lol

I just did the 500K and coil taps with my 4004C for a similar reason. It still has the bass and now can get very bright! That is the way I went. Plus I threw in a blend knob in place of the switch.

The HB-1's are dark pickups. You can do as others have done & get them a little brighter but they are still going to be darker than the single coils. Mine were very mid heavy making it difficult to EQ for more highs. I replaced them with Joe Barden pickups & I couldn't be happier. A balanced tone with a lot more highs & just as quiet as the HB-1's.
