Honestly if it's not causing you any problems right now other than looking bad I don't think it merits getting an aftermarket bridge (which requires a 5-screw layout to work, anyway). Very little contact is required to fully transduce the signal from the strings to the tailpiece to the body... which arguably isn't critical to making the bass sound good anyway since it would technically work if the string vibrated over the pickup, body or no body. What the body does (to the sound) is color the signal by influencing how the strings resonate and we want some of that because it's pleasing but surely you can have too much of a good thing too. And don't get me started on the quest for eternal sustain! Go listen to James Jamerson and tell me he would have wanted more...

I would get a 5-screw tailpiece if I were you. No tailpiece lift (not on my 2010 4003 anyway), looks nearly identical, sounds great. 3 screws is on spec for the reissue but it's just not as resilient.

...Now all that said, if this bass was bought new and is under warranty, you really should be trying to get help from RIC customer service, not us.

:shock: just a word of advice, I would not take that route. You have a vintage three screw TP on the instrument, some tail lift is to be expected.

I bought it used and the origanal owner never registered it so I have no warrantee anyway so in my opinion the aftermarket is the way to go I don't like sheet metal bridges and to put the 5 hole replacement would still require drilling holes to secure it all my other basses woke up big time with aftermarket bridges

yes the bridge is sheet metal it is not cast

Yeah. The RIC tailpiece is die cast zinc.

Speaking as a 4001C64 owner, I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't worry about an 1/8" of lift at all.

If it does truly trouble you and you want to change the tailpiece, I would do as others here suggested and buy a modern 5-screw tailpiece. If you really want peace of mind about tailpiece lift, modify the new tailpiece to a 7-screw tailpiece. It's an easy mod, and you can always reinstall the original 3-screw tailpiece to bring the bass back to stock.

An aftermarket tailpiece also won't have the mute, a necessity for cooling McCartney's tone, although with Roto rounds on there, that's probably not what you're after anyway.

ok sorry I have been very busy I took it to the tech his idea is to see if we can correct the bridge /tailpiece problem
what he found is the tp is slightly at an angle pulled up tward the e string side and the lift on the tp but he said not to get the aftermarket bridge t/p now I am going to try and put up some pics and see what you come with th cure this and yes it is a RIC
I cant get the pics up it keeps telling me the pic is invalid
