Man, when I was finished, I had some serious "lines" on the inside of my forearm about 2" down from my elbow. Got to the point of really being irritating.
Dont get me wrong, I love this instrument more that any other bass I have, and Hey, thats my fault for sitting with it for that long. But it wouldnt break my heart to see a 4003 "binding option" available. I would be willing to bet that 50% of buyers would opt out. You may not realize that you are tensing up your arm as you play, pulling it into the body of your 4003. There IS an opt out of the binding option on Rick basses. Known as 4004Cii and 4004L.

You are probably right about my playing style, Sort of like when I teach welding to a new apprentice, occasionally I reach over and feel thier hand while they are welding, 9 out of 10 times they have a "death grip" on the torch.. Guess I play that way sometimes, maybe Im afraid somebody is going to take my beloved 4003 from me. I never even thought about the 4004 series of instruments I do hope everyone knows that I was not being serious about the binding option thing in my first reply here..

If I am right and you don't relax your arm, you could cause yourself injury to your arm that can put a stop to your bass playing and other things with your hand and that has nothing to do with the binding. The 4004's are great, especially for a long gig. They are light, comfortable for those sensitive to the edge of binding and deliver great tone and punch. I highly recommend them.

how much more expensive can cb binding be than one-color binding? i do happen to think if the company is going back to the overall look and features of their vintage basses, that it would be logical to bring cb binding back as an important,(and way cool) part of that look. For a long time,i was under the impression the cb binding was not even available anymore, until someone recently pointed out that RIC still routinely makes guitars that feature it. (i don't pay a lot of attention to the skinny-stringed items....)

As I understand it, adding CB is really like binding twice since they have to do the CB layer and then the outer binding layer...

And is black binding any more expensive? I really dig the maple-glo with black binding--very striking contrast compared to the white binding which seems to get a little lost in the maple.
I never really get lines in my arm from the binding since I tend to move my plucking hand all over the place (I play with no effects--although I'd like to get into them and see how they "open up" some playing options--so my attack and where I attack makes up my "effects"). I guess, then, I may have shallow grooves up and down my arm as opposed to one or two DEEP lines from the binding.

I doubt that black binding is any more expensive than white. But, maintaining stock for 2 kinds, scheduling production runs for 2 different types, etc., etc. does cost money.
I like black binding on Mapleglo too. Perhaps when RIC gets to the point where the orders aren't coming in faster than they can produce guitars, they will again have the option of ordering black binding...
