There's definitely a Rick used on Signals,for sure Analog Kid,Digital Man,Chemistry,Subdivisions and Countdown.There's that unmistakeable Rick sound on those tracks.

I believe the Steinberger made it's appearance on Grace Under Pressure.

As for customization, he also changed the tuning pegs to Schaller, (smoother, different gear ratio might be the reason) plus the badass bridge as we all know in order to get (slightly) better sustain.
I forgot about the headless boatpaddle bass!

I had seen Rush on the "Signals" tour here in Denver back in the early 80's and Geddy used his 4001 and a Steinberger bass for that show.

Just to clear up a few things about Geddy's 4001:
He used a Badass 1 bridge, not a Badass 2.
The tuning keys are Grover Titans with wavy tuning keys. These were made for BC Rich bass guitars in the 1970s. They are available on Ebay if you look closely enough.
The capacitor is also NOT bypassed.
The most important thing about Geddy's Rickenbacker tone is obviously his playing style, but also the use of 15inch speakers. These create a round full sound that can handle the treble and mids being cranked a bit. No brittle or harsh sounds.
His best tone is Exit Stage Left in my opinion.
He used the EV 15s, but used solid state Ashly preamps and solid state Crown power amps.
Killer tone!!!!
