Looked great, played great, sounded great.
Didn't have the 4003 growl and brightness.
Maybe the strings were dead.
Sounded like a 4003 with flats.

Does yours sound throaty and growl like the 4003's?

How were they designed to sound?

Did you use the same EQ on the amp as you would for your 4003? HB-1 pickups have their own thing going on, tonally, so a 4004 will not sound like a 4003. Go back and mess around with the amp; your opinion of the 4004 may change for the better.

Also verify how fresh the strings are.

Same amp. Same settings.
2015 year make from the plate, so probly dead strings.
I really liked it! Love the simpler controls.
They also had a blue one but had more letters after the 4004. Maybe cii? No gloss on fboard. 4004 had gloss.
I can see myself getting more Rics one day.
I really love the tone of them and the shorter scale than 34-inchers.

Shorter scale? They're all 34 inchers, which is what gives them the deep, resonant fundamental tone and great sustain.

Actually, they are 33 1/4" scale length.

Bucks usually have less treble than coils but also less hum. Maybe that's what make the strings sound dead. The lesser treble

I dont think it was the humbuckers.
The reason I say this is because I just put HB1 pick ups in my 4003 and it sounds just as bright as it did with the high gains. Plenty of treble.

So maybe the strings were dead. Or maybe it's the stock pot and cap value selection. I put 500 K pots in my 4003 with a .022uf cap and harness when I put in the humbuckers.

I like the noiseless hubuckers better and also the cleaner controls of the 4004. I also like that the 4004 shows off the wood better having no pick guard. So if I have to buy another Ric I would probably want to buy a 4004.

Maybe it`s not the electronics at all. But some 400 people trying it out before you. Maybe it`s a question of good or bad vibrations (the job of the string). Stiff and greased=dead. Dead= no lows or highs, mostly mids. Maybe you can also hear it when playing the electric without amplification. The dead strings that is...

Sorry.
To clarify, I mean on the bursts or any finish that shows the wood.
It is nice that there is no pickguard on the 4004 series basses as this leaves the face of the bass uncovered so you can enjoy seeing more of the woodgrain on the transluscent/burst finishes if you like that sort of thing.

I find the bursts to be more visually stunning than the flat opaque finishes.
