It's the vintage look,toaster-top pickups,and wider neck that does it for me with the 660/12.I'll have it cremated along with me.

I have one of each (360-12 and 660-12) and have to say the 660 has more jangle--using same strings, same Boss GT6 settings, and same amp. Both guitars have their plusses and minuses so I alternate between them. And neither warm my heart as much as my 650 Sierra which has become my 6 string of choice.

Hi guys, I thought you might want to hear from a Ric girl. I really love all of my Rics and now I wish to purchase the 360/12 v64. I have a 620-12 jetglow. I had my guitar doctor install the 12 saddles and boy it was a real struggle. His big hands and the R tailpiece proved a challenge. For lead I really enjoy the 650 Atlantis I bought in 1996. Most of my playing is done sitting down, so I have not had any trouble with the heavy head. If there is a difference between the v64 and the C63 which one do you guys suggest? Thanks, Leslie

As for tonal, resonant, and overall sonic comparisons between the 360/12V64 and C63, I'll leave that for someone on this board who might own both of these models. Play on, play often. Welcome to the forum, Leslie. My personal opinion would be to go with the 360/12C63. V64's have been out of production for several years. Prices are rising on them, to the point that you'll pay almost as much for a used V64 as you will for a new C63 (and you'll get the five year warranty). The C63 also uses the new, redesigned 330/12 nut, which effectively gives you a bit more maneuvering room on that narrow neck. Besifes, the C63 is a more accurate replica of the old style mid-sixties 360/12.

I just took delivery of a 660/12 FG in February, and have played it at a few gigs since. It sounds fantastic to my ears - chimes like a bell, especially through my Twin Reverb. I played "Bells Of Rhymney" on it at home last week through my AD120VT, and it had the "Petty playing Byrds" sound that I really like.

Also - the wider neck is perfect for a 12-string, and the Fireglo with the gold TRC and pickguard looks very classy. All in all, I'm a very happy owner!

Have had my 660/12 FG for seven years now and couldn't be happier with it's "jangle." Though the hollow/solid difference comparisons are valid, an awful lot of the tone has to do with the amp settings too.

I thought I would "chime in" on this thread from several years ago, about the sound/tone of twelve strings. I have three Ric 12-strings.

First, the 360-12 has Scatterwound Toasters, as replacements for the original High Gains it came with. Second, my 660-12 also has Scatterwound Toasters, which are standard issue. I think the jangle and tone are very similar on these two guitars, even though one is the semi-hollow body, which I attribute to them both having the 7.4 Ω Scatterwounds. These two guitars sound very similar to ach other, using same amp settings.

A few years ago, I acquired a V64-12 dating from 1994 manufacture year. The V-64 has the "Hot Toasters" and it has a very different tone from the two Scatterwounds Toaster twelvers, when compared, utilizing the same amp settings. The Hot Toasters do not have as much "Jangle" as the Scatterwound Toasters, in my view. The sound of the Alnico magnet Hot Toasters on the V64-12 is a little more akin to a later years Ric High Gain, but not quite as much gain as the Ceramic magnet High Gains have. Using either an Original Janglebox or a Boss Compressor pedal with the V64-12, still does not quite match the jangle/tone of the Scatterwound models, when the Scatterwound equipped Rics are plugged into either of those Compressors, utilizing the same pedal settings.

I can fool around with amp settings and get some different tone from the V64 pickups, but it never sounds quite like the Scatterwounds on the 660-12 and 360-12. I attribute this to the windings on the pickups. If I am looking for a Byrdsy type "jangle" then I chose the 360 or 660 with the Scatterwounds over the V64-12. For a more bold, gainy, rocking tone, the V64 is better.

On the semi-hollow vrs solid body models, the differences in tone, for my ear, between the 360-12 and the 660-12 is with the placement of the pick-ups and using the blend knob. The 660-12 with a shorter span between the Neck and Bridge pick-ups, does not have that much distinctive tone differential, between the individual pick-ups, on it, as compared with experimenting with the individual pickups switched back and forth on my 360-12. Maybe this has something to do with the shorter-distance span of pickups on the 660-12 and the closeness of the Neck and Bridge pickups end up with them "cancelling" each other's volume out more, if both pickups are at full maximum volume on the pots ?? I think the 360-12 has more volume than the 660-12 overall, when using the same amp settings.

That's my personal view on the differences in Ric twelve stringers tone. Do others hear the tone differently between Hot Toasters and Scatterwounds on the 12-stringers ?
