Just wondering, I really like solidbody guitars, and I own a 650S which has a neck-through construction, but I have never played a bolt-on RIC (other brands, yes). Have any of you had the opportunity to play both neck-through and bolt-on RIC's? What are your impressions? How would you compare the two?

Ive got a 650D and 2 bolt-ons: a 220 and a 260. All have humbuckers; although the outer packaging on the 200 Series guitars that I have is different, the innards are the same.

There isn't a big difference between them, really. With separate volume and tone controls on the 650, there's a bit more variation available. My 220 and 260 stay in tune better, but I'm sure that's largely due to having a vibrato on my 650 (and me "dive bombing" on it).

I'd say my 650 is a bit more "mellow" sounding. The 650 is also lighter (weight-wise).

The necks on the 220 and 260 are not as wide as the 650, but they're a bit "meatier."

Thanks, Combo!

Regarding the effect of the neck joint on the tone, can you really notice a significant "flavor" for each? My question goes because lately, I have been noticing a certain characteristic quality of sound on the bolt-ons I play (not bad at all, just particular). I have played various brands and I always hear this barely audible quality in their sound they all have in common. But I've never played a Ric bolt-on...

In my words, I'd say that bolt-ons have this "edge" in the very high harmonic range that is very subtle and adds a certain raspy quality to the sound that results appealing. On the other hand, my neck-through results very compact, smooth and round in overall, but reaching the very low bass and the very high trebles. Also great. Do any of you have similar thoughts?

Yes, I'd agree with you, Bossa... there is a bit more "edge" with the bolt-on RICs I have. As I wrote earlier, my 650 seems a bit more "mellow" by comparison.
