Keep turning knobs and fidgeting long enough, and you will discover something you haven't heard before. Even 35 years later.
Today I was playing my new Ric 381, middle position, and (accidentally) turned down BOTH volume knobs a little. The bright edge disappeared, and suddenly I got a sound I can only describe as sweet and glassy. A certain wonderful something I've never heard come out of a Ric before.
Didn't work the same on another Ric with the higain pickups, not quite. But the "modern" Rics also have a longer neck that pushes the pickups closer together, so that might be part of it.
Will have to try the same thing on my Liverpool, which has the THREE toasters...
