So, I guess I need to figure out the overlap for the small headstock but old style wave/horn. and then just find one and see how it sounds! I can fix pickups later if I like the guitar. Did the 660 go through similar body shape changes?

If you want a smaller headstock 620, then you want one made before 1984. 1983 was a transition year - the headstocks are small still but the tuners are the larger box grovers. 1984/85 the larger headstocks are standard with the Schaller tuners.

As to the body changes on the horn - if I recall correctly they are around 2004/2005 or so.

The 620 is built (like the 4003) as a neck section that body wings are added to. (this is why there is a gap in the binding at the heel).

Pre 2005ish the line of the two body wings was jagged (ie one side was higher then the other). Current production the imaginary "line" between the two points is now the same. Again the thread that was linked to above on the RRF shows this change in photographs.

Finding a pre 1983 620 is not easy - but they do come up about twice a year on Ebay. Last one I saw was a November 1980 JG 620 that sold in April out of New England.

Rarer finishes like Ruby, Azureglo and Burgundy will be a longer wait - but MG, FG, and JG are more common.

At least you are not competing with all those Paul Weller / JAM fans for one. Everytime a pre 1983 330 comes up for sale there tends to be a bidding war.

I myself really love the chime of the late 70s / early 80s high gains.

Good luck on the search.
