I just looked closely at a picture in my Rolling Stone Tom Petty special edition, and it's Tom circa 1988 with a very odd Rickenbacker.

This is the best photo I could find on the web:

http://peach.typepad.com/tjs/images/DSC02990.JPG

It appears to me to be a 300-something, double bound with checkered binding, 21-fret bound neck, Autumnglo(?) finish, and no sound hole.

Is this a one-off or a prototype, or possibly some sort of bizarre variant that the factory once made? The thing that gets me the most is no sound hole. I didn't know they ever produced solid-top 330/360OS types.

It looks like a 360 OS prototype built to Tom Petty specs.

Yes, it is the solid body 360 WB that is in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in Cleveland.

I am sure he will tell the story of it himself - John Hall had it made as a Birthday present for Petty in the late 1980s.

It is solid maple, so it must be quite heavy - but I imagine it must sustain for days with the amp set to 11...

Not a prototype (despite what the card says at the Hall of Fame).

Very cool. It's the one he's holding on the Full Moon Fever cover, correct?

Yes indeed.

There is a long thread over at the RRF about this guitar - with lots of pics.
