It's not your imagination. Flat wounds are 'deader' than round wounds.

So I've had some time with these strings now and through the good amp and have to say I couldn't be happier. The tone is fantastic. Definitely less top end than the previous strings but so much more personality. I've been playing lots of blues and rockabilly through a very clean amp and they're just perfect for that. Very pleased :)

Flats are a whole different sound and feel than rounds. To my ears, flats sound much more "percussive" and have less "top-end". For the sake of comparison, you might want to try a good set of "pure nickel" wound 12's. With "pure nickel" wound 12's you'll get a brighter (but not too bright or harsh) more lively tone, and be able to bend strings much easier but maintain tuning. Really just a matter of personal preference, the important thing is to use the proper guage whether flats or rounds.

Yeah, a few people haver mentioned the trouble bending strings but I haven't found that to be the case. I've had no problem bending notes to my hearts content.
