Yesterday I received the October 2005 issue of Vintage Guitar in the mail (Gibson Firebird on the cover). At the back of each issue is a section called "Reader's Gallery" where people submit a picture of their collection. At the bottom of the page is a picture of an impressive collection of various amplifiers and Fender guitars. There are a few other guitars too.

The narrative states, "It's heavy on classic and classic-inspired Fender guitars (with a touch of Gibson and Rickenbacker flare), and Marshall amps (with some Vox, Fender, Kutsom, and other flavors)." There's one 330-type guitar, but it's clearly a fake. It has the wrong tailpiece, the dotted neck has binding, the cats-eye has binding, the triangle shaped name plate is wrong, and no fifth knob.

I'm kind of surprised that the magazine wouldn't identify this as a fake. Even if the collection's owner didn't disclose it in his submission, this type of magazine should have caught it.

It's one of those $299.00 Jay Tursers, made in China. Cheap labor and wood/parts.

I've heard rumors that JH has a band-saw on wheels that he hitches up to the Ferrari he uses, to speed to the scene for just such an emergency ! ! !

It is unfortunate that a magazine of this caliber did not notice this, however, this column being what it is, I suspect it gets little editor attention.
