Hey. I just purchased a Rickenbacker 610/12 from a guy in a garage sale ($150!). He told me that you're supposed to tune all of the strings down a whole step and just put a capo on the second fret. Is this true?

The LARGER of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th strings are tuned an octive lower per se, but alternate tunings are possible to a point, depending on string gauge and tension . . . I don't know about his capo comment . . .

He is talking nonsense, unless he knows there is something wrong with the guitar (like the nut is cut too deep & the capo is a way of circumventing it)
Still - for $150 you got a steal - a new nut doesn't cost much !

$150! Crap!

Traditionally, one would do just that with an acoustic 12 string. Rickenbackers are designed to be at concert pitch, and work perfect that way, especially if you have the right strings.

See also our strings page in the Boutique section of this site.

You sure it wasn't a 450/12?

Hi, my first post! I can't tell you how many times I've been asked if my 370 12 gets tuned down! Nopie! 13/56 Pyramids. I string my 360 6 string, 13/56 also. After really hard playing I might break an high octive 12 string 3rd. But with new strings, i can play my 360 with a ten penny nail and won't even have to tune at break. Nice forum! I wish I could find a 150 Ricky!
