Hi:

I own a Roger McGuinn 370-12RM model and love the built-in compression. BUT, as I mentioned years ago, quite often, I pick up radio stations with it!

So, I've tried many other compressors out there-- even bought an Analogman compressor (with (Ryck toggle). Interestingly, I went in person to Danbury CT and Analogan himself played my McGuinn 12-string!

He was absolutely astonished at HOW MUCH compression it had! I bought his Comprossor and it is very good-- but NOT as much compression as the McGuinn model.

Can the AMOUNT of compression be measured-- and does anyone know a compressor that is off the charts???

The spurious radio reception has nothing to do with the compressor, unless it has a defective part, like a capacitor. More than likely, it is the strings acting as an antenna, the pickups as the radio coils, and something in the grounding or shielding not bleeding off the radio noise.

As far as amount of compression, all compressors are designed with a "ratio" in their circuitry. It is a matter of looking up the specs of each compressor. Now, that said, from a guitar perspective, it is a non-issue. Some compression can help with tone and sustain, but beyond a certain point, it will strangle the tone like it is in a bucket. Some like that effect, but it is rather not what we think of as the touch of compression to enhance Rickenbacker Jangle.
