I have a 325V59 that needs to be intonated. A couple of the small bridge springs are compressed to the max and will not allow further backing. Can I safely remove those springs to intonate the strings? What is the purpose of the springs anyway?

They help hold the saddle in place through the tension of the spring pushing against it. Depending on how much you need to move the saddle you could either cut the spring to make it shorter, or you could remove it, as most likely, the pressure of the string pushing down on the saddle will hold it in place just fine unless you are a pretty aggressive player. But trying this out won't damage the instrument.

I clipped the low E string spring (say that quickly!) to get the additional travel needed.
