the 3 pickup 370-12 is the one you can hear in the "Mr. Spaceman" album, where McGuinn got the maximum out of the pickup combinations. It was the richest most powerful and penetrating sound he ever got from the 370, which is a 360 with an added pickup. Nothing else compares. Listen to "Mr. Spaceman" and David Crosby's "What's Going On". The solo sounds are creamy delicious.
The first two albums "Tambourine Man" and "Turn Turn Turn" were done with the 2 pickup 360-12 and the sound is pretty much the same throughout both albums.
In the "My Back Pages" he did not extract much sound, it was more subdued and he used the neck pickup a lot throughout the album.
For my 1966 370-12 I had a blank lower pickguard cut, drilled 5 holes, and installed master volume and tone pots, with one on-off switch for each pickup. I like it simple.
yes I saved the original controls just in case I wanted to go back, but I prefer the different combinations that the three switches allow. I have owned this guitar since 1967. It is a treasure of a guitar.
